Not a Harry Devlin moment

Yesterday evening I attended the Insider Liverpool Professional Awards ceremony for 2008. It's not the sort of event at which you'd catch my fictional alter ego, Liverpool lawyer and amateur sleuth Harry Devlin - a rather glitzy black tie do, organised by the Insider magazine.

But a real surprise (not least because no short-lists had been announced in advance of the event) was in store, as it was announced that I was short-listed for the award for Liverpool Lawyer of the Year. I didn't win, but an added pleasure was that someone else on the short-list of five was my friend of thirty years, and long-time business partner Carole Atkinson (who, like me, was a bit nonplussed by the unexpected accolade.)

So, all very gratifying. But what Harry would have made of it, I can scarcely imagine....

Congratulations. That's quite an honor. And even though you write those mysteries under your own name :)

Well, when my first book came out, I did wonder if my colleagues and clients might look askance, especially as my fiction has never portrayed the legal world in an especially flattering light, and there are many jokes at lawyers' expense. But in the event, they have long proved remarkably supportive and I'm very grateful for that.
